“岳镇渎海”是中国古代山川崇拜的主要对象，自汉代起即由官方主持祭祀，是国家祀典的重要组成部分。所谓“镇”即镇山，共有五座，是五岳之外的中国“下一等”名山。五座镇山都有镇庙，今天只有霍山中镇庙、沂山东镇庙和医巫闾山北镇庙还有踪迹可寻。
