南京博物院的前身是1933年筹备成立的国立中央博物院，也是1990年代末以前，新中国以博物院命名的两座大型博物馆中的一座。鲜为人知的是，清代宫廷文物是南博馆藏的主要特色之一。这些文物继承自1914年成立的“古物陈列所”，是热河行宫和沈阳故宫的旧藏。
