新津观音寺重建于明代宣德年间，在天顺、成化是直至正德年间都有大规模的添建。作为国内少数现存较为完整的明代佛寺，观音寺的建筑和雕塑反映了明代四川地区较高的艺术水平，毘卢殿的《十二圆觉》壁画在风格、技法、题材、内容等各方面都和北京法海寺的壁画有着较为密切的联系。
