黑水城位于草原丝绸之路，戈壁大沙漠以南，是西夏和蒙元时期的重要军事要塞。黑水城出土文献亦以这两个时期为主，被誉为上世纪我国四大考古出土文献之一。和敦煌藏经洞类似，黑水城的出土文献和艺术品于上世纪初遭到外国探险家的多次劫掠而流失海外，今天主要收藏在圣彼得堡的冬宫博物馆和伦敦的大英博物馆。
