净土宗是佛教中国化以后发展出的主要宗派之一。山西交城县石壁山玄中寺因是净土宗理论和思想奠基者昙鸾等人活动过的寺院，而被后世遵奉为净土祖庭。玄中寺是少有的自五十年代初起就得到国家建设并维护的佛教寺院。今天访问玄中寺，不仅是面对一段中国佛教的发展史，也有中日文化交流的一个篇章。
